Beyond Coping

Many queer men have learned to cope with stress, loneliness, shame, rejection, or emotional overwhelm in ways that once made sense but eventually became costly.

Beyond Coping is a six-session support group for queer men who are questioning their relationship with substances, compulsive behaviours, or other patterns they feel may no longer be serving them. Rather than viewing addiction as a moral failing or lack of willpower, this group explores it through a different lens: as an attempt to manage pain, seek connection, regulate emotions, or survive difficult circumstances. Together, we’ll explore the psychological, relational, and social factors that can shape addictive patterns while building practical tools, greater self-understanding, and more sustainable ways of coping.

Why This Group?

A queer-affirming perspective
Many addiction resources overlook the role that minority stress, shame, concealment, belonging, and queer social experiences can play in substance use and recovery. This group places those experiences at the center of the conversation rather than treating them as an afterthought.

Harm reduction friendly
Grounded in harm reduction, the group meets people where they are to support meaningful change without judgment. You do not need to be abstinent to participate. Some participants may be pursuing abstinence. Others may be reducing their use, exploring change, recovering from a relapse, or simply trying to better understand their relationship with substances or compulsive behaviours. Everyone is welcome.

WHO IS THIS FOR?

Beyond Coping may be a good fit for men who feel stuck in patterns that no longer align with the life they want to build. Some participants may be questioning their relationship with substances or behaviours. Others may have experienced cycles of stopping, restarting, relapsing, or wondering whether something needs to change.

This group is designed for queer men who are looking for a space that is thoughtful, affirming, and non-judgemental. It may be especially valuable for those who feel isolated, disconnected, or interested in connecting with other queer men who may understand some of the challenges they are facing.

You do not need to identify as being "in recovery" to participate. Curiosity, openness, and a willingness to reflect on your experiences are enough.

WHAT WE’LL EXPLORE

Session 1
Who We Are and Why We’re Here
Understanding addiction as adaptation rather than moral failure. Exploring coping, shame, minority stress, and the reasons many people turn to substances in the first place.

Session 2
Shame, Secrecy, and Survival Strategies
How shame, concealment, and self-protection shape behaviour and make change more difficult.

Session 3
Relationships, Loneliness, and Queer Connection
Exploring attachment, belonging, loneliness, validation, intimacy, and connection.

Session 4
Triggers, Cravings, and Coping Tools
Understanding urges, emotional regulation, and practical coping strategies.

Session 5
Values, Identity, and Growth
Moving beyond surviving toward building a life that feels meaningful and aligned with who you are.

Session 6
Moving Forward
Creating sustainable plans for support, recovery, and continued growth. We'll conclude by exploring the Beyond Coping 5Ps of Recovery framework, which brings together many of the key themes discussed throughout the program.

HOW REGISTRATION WORKS

Registration
Choose either the Monday or Wednesday cohort and register for the first session date. Registration is completed through JaneApp, the secure online booking platform used by This Might Work.

Intake Package
After registering, you will automatically receive an intake package that includes informed consent forms, group guidelines, and payment information.

Registration Deadline
Registration is not considered complete until all required intake forms have been submitted and payment has been received. Because spaces are limited, incomplete registrations may be released after 24 hours to allow waitlisted participants an opportunity to register.

Payment & Insurance Receipts
The program fee is $300 and is paid before the group begins to reserve your place in the cohort. To support insurance reimbursement, the payment is held as a credit on your JaneApp account and applied to each session as it is attended. After each completed session, a psychotherapy receipt for $50 will be issued automatically. Participants who attend all six sessions will receive six psychotherapy receipts of $50 each, totaling $300. As insurance coverage varies between providers and plans, participants are encouraged to confirm eligibility directly with their insurer before registering.

Attendance
This group is designed as a six-session series, with each session building on the discussions and learning from previous weeks. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions whenever possible. Because the group is intentionally small, regular attendance helps support both your experience and the experience of other group members.

Withdrawal & Refunds
Participants may withdraw before the first session and receive a full refund. After the first session, refunds will be issued only for unused session credits remaining on the participant's account. Session credits associated with attended sessions are non-refundable. Because group spaces are limited and cannot always be filled once the program begins, no refunds will be provided for missed sessions.

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Beyond Coping is a psychoeducational and supportive psychotherapy group. It is not a substitute for individual psychotherapy, crisis services, emergency mental health care, addiction detoxification services, or medical treatment.

Meet your facilitator

Laszlo Nap
MA, Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying)
I bring a compassionate, reflective, and non-judgmental approach to working with people navigating addiction, compulsive coping, shame, and emotional overwhelm. My work is informed by both personal and professional experience, as well as a belief that many behaviours that become problematic often begin as attempts to cope, connect, or survive. Beyond Coping was created to offer queer men a space to better understand the role substances and other coping behaviours may play in their lives, while exploring practical strategies for change, self-understanding, and support. My goal is not to tell people what recovery should look like, but to help them develop a clearer understanding of themselves and discover what might work for them.
